Piazzale Santa Maria – Church of San Francesco

Looking out over the Paglia valley from here, one can easily spot the chimney of the Fornace Cordeschi, built in the 1920s and active until 1993.  The clay historically used for manufacturing was quarried in this valley from the 15th century.

This area of the city is inextricably linked to the name of Domenico Fuschini, who founded the Fuschini Factory in 1926 and was initiated a great revival for Aquitaine ceramics.

The factory was located where Rosella Palombi’s terracotta statuette of the Madonna (2010) now stands, between the hospital and the church, and occupied a multi-storey building, including part of the Franciscan convent. In the 1960s, when activities ceased, it was demolished.
