In 1922, accountant Saverio Cordeschi and his brother Enrico founded the Fornaci Cordeschi in the place where clay had been mined for centuries, employing a large number of workers and creating an important allied industry. The factories remained active until the 1970s.
Near the centre, an entire district was built exclusively with the bricks produced here, including the splendid Cordeschi Amphitheatre (1937-1938).
